Viewing height sets the angle
Record eye line, plinth height and camera tilt before reading proportion or visibility.

Document the exhibition layer before interpreting the object, and keep every limitation of present access attached to the image.
Locate your eye line
Estimate which part of the object sits level with the camera and show it in a room frame. A low object is seen from above; a monumental or elevated object is seen from below. Those angles change visible top surfaces, base depth and apparent proportion. Declaring viewing height is more useful than pretending every photograph is a neutral frontal record.
Use vertical references
Case posts, door frames and plinth edges reveal camera tilt and converging lines. Keep them visible in at least one contextual image. Digital perspective correction can be useful for presentation, but it creates a transformed view and must be logged. Never use a corrected derivative as if it were an unmediated measurement image.
Separate access from intention
A museum may establish a viewing height for conservation, circulation, accessibility or interpretation. The photograph records that present arrangement; it does not by itself prove the object’s ancient viewing level. Connect historical placement to archaeology and scholarship rather than transferring the gallery eye line backward in time.
Check hidden surfaces
From below, the top of a base or head may disappear; from above, undersides and vertical faces vanish. List those missing surfaces and seek institutional images that document them separately. Do not infer decoration or condition on an inaccessible plane from a similar object. A complete limitation note is better than an invented reconstruction.
Manage monumental scale
Stepping farther away reduces angular distortion but can introduce barriers, people and architecture. Make both encounter and analytical frames. Quote official dimensions rather than estimating from visitors or floor tiles. A telephoto crop changes framing, not camera height, and should not be captioned as eye-level access.
Photograph small objects responsibly
Small objects placed below the eye invite steep angles and reflections. Stay behind barriers and do not lower equipment into restricted space. Use a wider context, then a permitted detail. If the top is visible but the front is foreshortened, state that tradeoff. Catalogue photography can supplement the visitor view as a distinct source.
Consider different visitors
One installation produces different sightlines for children, seated visitors and standing adults. Avoid presenting your camera height as universal access. When evaluating display rather than documenting an object, record sightlines from permitted positions and consult official accessibility information. Do not photograph identifiable visitors as evidence without considering privacy.
Caption angle precisely
Use concrete wording: photographed from below plinth level, from a standing eye line, or at a downward angle through the case. Note lens correction and crop. This vocabulary helps readers distinguish sculptural proportion from the projection created by the present museum encounter.
Compare camera positions visibly
Place low, level and high views together only when every position is labeled. Keep full frames so convergence and visible surfaces remain apparent. Readers should see why head, base or top plane changes instead of receiving normalized crops that hide the cause.
Protect orientation in derivatives
Rotation and keystone correction can aid inspection, but both alter projection. Retain the original, log transformation values and mark corrected versions. Never use a transformed frame for proportion claims without showing how it was produced.
A visitor photograph does not independently prove object identity, material, condition, original context or current availability. Use the exact responsible record and preserve unavailable views.
